Mothers’ Magic

Play

Backstory

We’ve all heard the story of the mom who lifted the car to free her son trapped beneath. Made the headlines.  It’s not unlike phenomenal things done by moms every day that never get recognized. We took a look at what makes moms tick.

Mother’s Magic

What magic is given to mothers that they have such an ability to soothe? Antibiotics may cure the illness, but it’s a mother’s hands that soothe the pain, calm the fears and provide the reassurance.

Your hand in your mom’s can fix things, at any age. She always seems to know how you feel, what you need, and what might be worrying you. She’s someone you can talk to, turn to, confess to.

What a wonderful gift she is. Her smile can remind you of the best in yourself. Her encouragement can convince you that you CAN get it done.

When she doesn’t agree with you, she just may give you the cause to pause that results in making a better decision.

On Mother’s Day and year-round, give thanks that God made mothers. Something to consider.

P.S.  My mom has been gone from my daily life for some time now. She sure is not gone from my spiritual life though. I feel in my soul, the values she taught and the lessons we learned, together. She was such a positive impact on my life that I love remembering her and acknowledging her magic, even now.

Private Moments for Mothers

Play

Backstory

The role of mother has always been pivotal.  Even more so in times like a global pandemic and dangerous disruption.  Mothers are called on to calm fears, provide balance, keep moving things in the right direction.  And they do. This is for you.

Private Moments for Mom

This is a little private moment for the mothers in our audience. Did you ever think you’d be able to nurse a baby, cook dinner, and sew a button on a shirt, all at the same time? Where did we learn how to do things like that?

What magical power was bestowed upon us for the years when our families needed us 24/7? Where did we get the patience to sit and rock for hours on end soothing a crying baby who refused to be comforted? Sometimes we know exactly what to do . . . and sometimes we don’t.

So this is for mothers whose children have gone astray, who can’t find the words to reach them. This is for all the mothers who taught their children to be peace-loving and now pray they come home safely from a war.

The emotions of motherhood are universal and our thoughts today are for young mothers stumbling through diaper changes and sleep deprivation, and mature mothers learning to let go. For working mothers and stay-at-home mothers. Single moms and married moms. Mothers with money, mothers without.

Hang in there. In the end, we can only do the best we can. Tell them every day that we love them and show them besides. And pray and never stop being a mom.   No, never stop.

P.S.  As Mother’s Day approaches and you consider a gift for your mom, put at the top of the list – time with her. Go shopping with her, take her to the park, cook her favorite dinner – together. Realize that YOU are the best gift she could get.

Adult Son/Little Guy

Play

Backstory

He lives very far away, up on the Canadian border.  I don’t know his best friends, as I did when he was under my roof. I learn most of his achievements and activities by following his posts on Facebook. So how could I possibly feel close to my adult son?

It is by the compliments I hear from others. Watching him crowned the head of this committee or the leader of that effort. Seeing his children cared for, smart and thriving. It’s by seeing the love in his wife’s eyes and his when they catch each other in a glance and smile. Even though we can’t often share dinner at the Japanese Steakhouse, he is always in my heart.

Adult Son

A friend asked me the other day, “When you see your grown son, is there a tie to the little guy you taught to walk, and talk, and think? Or is there a disconnect from that long ago path, so that you only see the man today and not the child?”

Oh no, my friend, the man is never disconnected from the child the mother raised. You remember the ups and downs. You see a scar on his adult hand or knee and remember what put it there.

You remember how hard it was for him to learn certain things, and those he mastered with hardly an effort. You swell with pride at the challenges he meets over the years and feel his hurt to the core when he is ill or in danger, or off the track.

He is that little toddler, that searching teen and that wonderous man, all rolled into one.

At least to his Mom.

P.S.

I hope you have lots of photos of your grown son, back when he was a toddler and youngster and teenager.  Polaroids were so popular then but they disappear, in time.  We had loads of slides. Hard to mount in a butterfly-fringed picture frame.  Treasure the photos you captured and have retained. They are precious.

Young Mom Heroes

Play

Backstory

Some young mothers schooled at home. Some worked and tended simultaneously. Every mother soothed and promised that fun times would return.

Young Mom Heroes

This Mother’s Day will be particularly special for young mothers. Those who will enthusiastically accept the vase of dandelions, handmade cards from school, the poetry of childhood strained to express the love they feel.

It’s so difficult to be a mother today. There are so many constraints that require concern and worry. The media’s emphasis on negative happenings can convince you there’s a boogey man around every corner. Strangers are influencing your children and they seem to get less exposed to less gentle things so very early.

Yet, in most families here in the valley, there is a loving young mother doing her best to counteract the downsides to make life safe and sweet and secure. To ensure that their children know the benefits of love and being good and obedience and respect.

To those young mothers, accept this salute for the fine job you are doing as you juggle home, job, volunteering, and most of all, caring for your children.

Happy Mother’s Day, and thanks for all you do.

P.S.

In the spirit of motherly gratitude, thanks too to those who help young mothers.  The grandparents, babysitting friends and those who share trips or chores.  Every bit helps when young parents have so many roles to fill.  Happy Mother’s Day to you all too.

The Strength of Women

Play

Backstory

Recent months have made such extra demands on women.  New virtues of courage and resilience were called into focus by busy moms, lonely grandmothers and those sequestered alone,

Women’s Strength –  #267

Women have strengths that amaze. We bear hardships and carry burdens, but we hold happiness, love and joy. We smile when we want to scream, cry when we’re happy and laugh when we’re nervous.

We fight for what we believe in and stand up to injustice. We don’t take no for an answer when we believe there is a better solution. We go without so our family can have. We cry when our children excel and cheer when our friends get awards. We nurture and juggle responsibilities effectively. We keep everyone on schedule and get them there on time.

Our responsibilities as a mother never end. We are always there when needed and everyone depends on that. We are the glue that holds everything together. We are strong when it seems there is no strength left. We know that a hug and a kiss can heal a broken heart.

Women come in all shapes, sizes and colors. They drive, fly, walk, run or email you to show how much they care about you. The heart of a woman is what makes the world keep turning.

We women have one flaw, however. We forget our worth. Never forget your worth.

You are amazing.

P.S.

The joy you get when you hear a teenager agreeing with one of your long-preached truisms. The pride in her voice when your daughter tells of something you did right  They don’t go around singing your praises, so you have to watch for the rare opportunities when you catch a glimpse at how much you are appreciated by those you love.  As I said, you are amazing!

Salute to Young Moms-  #292

It’s so difficult to be a young mother today. There are so many restraints that require concern and worry. The media’s emphasis on negative happenings can convince you there’s a boogie man around every corner.

How do you teach children to be open and sociable and yet wary of strangers at the same time? Outside forces are influencing your children and they seem to get exposed to less gentle things so very early.

Yet in most families here in the country there is a loving young mother doing her best to counteract the downsides: to make life safe and sweet and secure.; to assure that her children know that they are loved and the benefits of being good, obedient, and respectful.

It’s hard to know how much of an impression you are making. But you know what, don’t stop. Kids learn the lessons you are teaching. They learn from the examples you set by what you do and say. It will serve them well in the years ahead when they have hard choices to make. You are setting their moral compass, and that’s never easy.

To those young mothers, accept this salute for the fine job you are doing as you juggle home, job, volunteering, and most of all caring for your children in helping them to grow and prosper, meeting each day’s challenge.

Thanks for all you do young moms. Never give up. We are counting on you.

P.S.

Young mothers often don’t recognize that there is help available if they are overwhelmed.  Moms groups, adoptive grandparents, girls and boys clubs, scouts, church groups, local parks & rec activities and social agencies are worth looking into. They could provide what is needed to get you to the next step.
